Job Costing Software
Having sold integrated job costing software to all
types of construction and manufacturing companies, I have come to know this type of software inside and
out.
There are so many different types of businesses that can, in fact, use job costing to their
advantage. Yes, the two mentioned above, but what about service business, schools, retail, wholesale and
distribution are examples?
Controlling Job
Cost
Too often we see companies that have been offering great values to
the public, change their philosophy when they grow into large companies. What happens, in my opinion, is that the
‘bean-counters’ somehow take control of the business. Their focus goes from providing a great product to that of
only watching the bottom line. And the product (or service) always suffers. Controlling cost has to be a
concern to management at any step of the growth pattern, but what makes your company grow is the product
that you offer. So watch that dollars are not spent foolishly but don’t sweat the ‘pennies and dimes’ that go
into your product and makes it different from the fellow’s down the street or across the country.
Integrating the Total Software
Package
Once you have decided to computerize your job costing, make
sure that all the modules work together. It does you no good if the modules do not feed each other. If your
accounting people have to duplicate their work to give you the reports you need to take to the bank, you might have
to wait more than you want to before you are ready.
You need to be able to look at any report with up-to-the-minute postings on your time schedule,
whether that is 10 am on Monday morning or 10 pm on Sunday night. It is your time, it is your business.
Job Costing Gives You Answers
Now
The bottom line is that the job costing has all the costing and
income posted to the particular jobs. This gives you, the contractor, all the information, detailed job by job and
phase by phase. There is no other tool that gives you the overall picture of what the health of your business
literally looks like.
